Animal Farm satarises the 'intentions' of Communism versus the results. Where equality and freedom were promised, all that eventuated was a new exploitation of the workers by the new elites. Basically it shows how power corrupts, and when fundamental rights are changed, freedom is lost.

The novel can be discussed within the specific context of the reality of Stalinist oppression in the 1940's in contrast to the idealistic vision of the Russian revolution and the stated aims of communism, that is, to build a better world for all, particularly those marginalised or at risk within society. The egregious failure of communism to achieve this goal made a mockery, or a comedy, if you like of the communist slogans and the cult of personality that was built up around Stalin; this theme is built upon in the more prosaic work of Solzhenitsyn. On a broader level; however, the book could be seen as a kind of human comedy, more in the style of the absurdists or the Greek tragedians, where human aspirations are always bound to fail in the face of the-ultimately tragic- human condition.

Um, no, it wasn't a satire of human society as a whole, but criticized Leninist/Marxist communism in a satirical way. Just read the book yourself, you should finish in too days.
