the earth moves due to tempurature changes deep underground
which is also why there are earthquakes.
but i'm not sure why that would make the roof creak. could still be temp changes idk.

The house is "creaking" because of the expansion and contraction of the various materials in your home. Different materials expand and contract at different rates, ergo the "creaking". The fact that it seems to be getting louder and occur more often could be the change in seasons and greater swing in temperature and humidity or quite simply that you started worrying about it and now you notice every little thing, whereas everybody else house "creaks and most people don't notice it. In other words... it's in your head, relax, have a beer and enjoy your home. Good Luck.

The reason could be the change in temp inside your attic. Temp changes can cause the roof to swell or contract a bit. It could be the house just settling, a house will squeak and crack through out their lifetime. For your own comfort get a contractor to look at it.

Thermal expansion. When things heat up, they grow, when they get cold, they shrink. Ever been in a cold pool? Yeah..... Anyway, what you're hearing is thermal expansion.
