My fingers are killing from the fret and i know i have to keep practicing and eventually i'll develope them, but how long do you think it will take?

I'm assuming you mean for guitar? I play cello (like a big violin that you sit down to play) and if you play regularly, (like every day), they'll gradually develop. When I was younger and learning, I used a dab of vinegar on my fingertips. It helped them develop and prevented them from being quite so sore (if I practised loads). It only smells for a bit.
Bear in mind that if you stop playing, the calouses will either peel of (it's just like dead skin) or soften up again. So once you've got them, make an effort to play for at least an hour or two a week.

It only took me a couple of weeks; but it all depends. I had played violin before so it could have callused my fingers a little for the guitar. Just keep at it!

for my guitar, it took me about 2 weeks, playing everyday, about 3 hours.

what kind of music do you play?
