Metallica--Master of Puppets
Slayer--Reign in Blood
Pantera--Vulgar Display of Power
Motorhead--No Sleep Til Hammersmith
Anthrax--Among the Living
I definitely could have picked more Slayer and also many others. I could have picked Sabbath and other older bands, but wanted to keep it a little heavier.

Couldn't say what's the best, or even rank the top five, but I'll just throw a few out there and we'll see what you think.
(all these were considered heavy metal by at least one source at the time of their release)
The symbols album, by Led Zeppelin, which has Stairway to Heaven on it.
Slippery When Wet, by Bon Jovi
1984, by Van Halen
Master of Puppets, by Metallica
Back in Black, by AC/DC
Bon Jovi and Van Halen will get comparatively low placement in any Top Album list, because of the basic question of whether they're considered heavy metal or not, but both bands shaped the face of Heavy Metal music today, so I include them both.

I never answer questions like this, because, by nature, there is no right or wrong answer to the question. However, after reading the answers that were posted before I had the chance to click on the question, I determined that I must step in and comment.
By no means am I saying that my picks are the right answer, but these albums must be considered, and everyone who knows anything about music will agree.
"Appetite For Destruction" Guns'n Roses
"Back in Black" AC/DC
"Van Halen 1984" Van Halen
"Toys in the Attic" Aerosmith
"The Black Album" Metallica

In no specific order (this is not counting Guns N Roses - Appetite For Destruction):
Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Megadeth - Countdown To Extinction
Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny
No doubt on any of those.
