How are bars legal, most people drink at bars, how do they get home? I understand if you have a designated driver, but that's rarely the case. Taxis are over an hour away here. Almost everyone that goes to a bar is looking to get trashed(maybe it is only that way here where I live, mostly a bunch of low life alcoholics and druggies) so why do cops not watch people who leave the bar. Why do they not make the person who says they are driving take a breath elizer(can't spell it, sorry)before they leave? It's not worth someones life just to have a few drinks and go home, if you want to play pool, get a pool table, or if you want to hang out with friends and drink, why not camp out together so you can all drink and not have to worry about going home or driving..It frustrates me how bars are perfectly legal, our state is zero tolerance, so one drink is considered illegal, like the ad says, buzzed driving is drunk driving...If the government prohibits brothels and such they can control a bar.

Wow, thank you all, most of you have great replies, and it's going to be so hard to pick the best answer. I guess it's just in the hands of policemen and law enforcers to do their job.

Wow. You really want to live in a state that prohibits you from choosing whether or not to break the law? I don't. Designated driver.

I agree with you about people should just choose to stay home if they want to get intoxicated. It is an ancient part of civilization itself to meet and greet in public with alcoholic beverages, though. It's only the presence of private cars and suburbias, that complicates things for us now.

I just don't think the answer is to outlaw bars. Drinking and driving is already illegal; people would just drive to each other's homes to drink instead. Then you'd have to have prohibition, and we've been down that road. The answer is to enforce the law as it stands, which is not being done as well as it could be.

What state do you live in that has zero tolerance? No, I can easily have a couple drinks and not be impaired.

Also, this shows why young people shouldn't drink. As you get older, getting smashed, isn't a goal. I'm all for responsible drinking. I get upset when it's taken too far. I'll bet money that I can be legally drunk and still be a better driver than some elderly drivers or some teen-agers that go hot rodding down the street.

Well, I don't really have a good answer, but you are certainly right about the dangers of irresponsible drinking.that is one of the problems that i see, many people who drink at bars do get too drunk. Have you ever tried to get a drunk to let you drive? It is nearly impossible to get them to admit they can't drive and to relinquish the keys. There are more women in prison for driving drunk and injuring or killing someone than for nearly any other crime, at least in my state. One thing they could do is make it harder to get strong beer. Here you can buy liquor at WalMart, and they have 5 point beer everywhere. We have a huge percentage of wrecks caused by drunk drivers.I don't think it is just the bars, but irresponsible drinking in general. I wish if people want to drink, they would do it at home or where ever they plan on spending the time that they are drunk, and the time it takes to sober up!

i know of alot of police men who frequent bars for a relaxing drink after a hard day on the job. one or two drinks doesn't make everyone drunk. but i do think that the drunks truly drunks should never be allowed to drive a car if there caught more then once.

Sorry to say this, but cops in cities have better things to do than pulling over some buzzed partiers. They have to deal with real crimes like shootings and robberies. I know. ".08 is the law" Well, .08 is a beer and a sip, and cops know this. I know cops that have do deal with real criminals and have even talked to them about drunk driving. They just laugh it off and then go on about the real crimes.

I think you have answered your own question, but mainly the reason bars are allowed to operate is because it brings revenue into the State and that is probably the mainstay of income for the Court system.

It is income security for the legal system and for the Police departments
