i did a science project on this same type of topic of cleaning pennies and the easiest and most affective is cleaning it with lemon juice because it has citric in it....try it....its going to work...

learned this on a TV show 25 years ago....
Put them in a jar with vinegar (any kind will do) then add some salt (enough that it doesn't dissolve) and give it a shake for a while (oh, about 30 seconds)
