what the heck is a bandit? i've already asked once and got no answers at all

A bandit is someone who runs a marathon without registering (getting a number and paying a fee)
Some people do it for the thrill.
Some do it because the registration was full and they missed it.
Some do it to save the fee which for Chicago this year was $90
Some do it because races like Boston have entry requirements (maximum times run in other marathons) to be allowed entry.
At many races they have officials that pull bandits off the course.
