Most overrated band ever...
Took all the credit that should have gone to Sonic Youth.

Many people are often mistaken by the influence of Nirvana. True many people could probably play better but no one influenced the generation of listeners when they were a hit with their passionate and wicked lyrics. Introduction of their music, the words, the simple cords just came at the time that the fans needed that sound the most.
Cobain, yes king of all kings and to me a God. People look at him in different ways but everyone must agree on one thing, Nirvana was great whether you think they've gotten too much credit or not enough, they are landmarkings of Rock Music.
Live on Cobain! Never let your soul die! It lives on through us, the fans!!!

I'm going to go out on a limb and call them "overrated" for three reasons. First, no doubt amazing band, but I feel their legacy is somehow tainted by the current state of music. There are far too many bad "emo" bands dominating the airwaves which I believe are part of a movement they started or at the very least they prevented the rise of more classically influenced rock bands. This brings me to point number two. You may not be familiar with them but I feel relatively comfortable in saying that Pavement is actually the best band of the 90's. Their music is probably the most original thing to come out of the decade. If you put any credence into Pitchfork media's opinion then check out their list of the top albums of the decade. Pavement put two in the top 10 neither of which is their wholly underrated third effort "Wowee Zowee" equal in quality to "The White Album". The third reason I believe Nirvana to be overrated is a lack of originality. Cobain certainly brought something different to the table; however, he himself called the band a Pixies ripoff, and indeed they borrow quite a bit from the late '80's indie scene. Summing up I think they are absolute legends, but not quite to the level of the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. They have been given a little bit too much credit over the course of the years. Let's be honest, they don't even own the bragging rights to the best album of the decade (OK Computer), I'd say that's pretty unequivocal.

Nirvana still rules after so many years. I absolutley adore this band. Even their worst songs can top some of the best songs of today's "rock." It's just hard to explain these guys, for instance, I can take Nirvana seriously, all the new emo and watered-down punk bands just sound like a bunch of prepubescent boys, therefore making it difficult to relate to them. They all end up sounding the same. When it came to grunge, you could differentiate who the bands where by their style and the lead singers voice. Each band was unique in that sense, and Nirvana had a hand in starting the whole grunge trend, so I feel that they should be idolized. I love them.

I think they were pretty good. Maybe genius, I don't know. There are a lot of "geniuses" in music; it just depends on what you like.
I'm not a fan of music that is mostly screaming and indistinguishable guitar gnashing, which Nirvana sometimes devolves into. But other than those songs, they're good. And they sounded different from any other bands I had heard before. I have their first cd and I listen to it once in a while.

They did bring on a great movement in the early 90's into grunge. Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE fan, but they are no geniuses. Instrumentally and lyrically, there was no incredible awesomeness bringing new insight or musical style. For the music, they were just bringing it back to life, but nothing else really.
I guess you can call them pioneers, using that term loosely where if they didn't go mainstream, all types of genres of rock would not be.
and glam metal wouldve just kept on going.
Tunes are catchy, words easy to interpret, so it's fun to jam to the songs. i love em.
