The basic behind custom size of VM is "VM must be 2times greater than system memory(RAM). So if you have 256MB RAM
then the recommended VM size is 512MB. so set the minimum memory to half of RAM eg. 128 and Go to 2times or more(512MB or 1024) but to get the best performance from VM you must give it system selected size and and provide it 5-10 GB space. One more thing it is more better if you provide it fully blank partition only for VM. That will allow windows to choose desired memory freely at need without the intervention of files, system programs etc. 'coz u had'nt installed them.

Basicly you are making reference to RAM. You will need 128 to run windows poorly, 256 to run at somewhat less than acceptable level, 512 to run smoothly. If you are going to be doing gaming or things like photoshop, you would want 1gig.
When vista comes out, you will need 1 gig and 2 to run it well. It is a memory hog. All the old code from older versions of windows is still in there sucking up resources.

digital (or logical) memory is a theory that, at the same time as carried out by technique of a pc and its operating device, facilitates programmers to apply an truly tremendous kind of memory or storage addresses for saved archives. The computer maps the programmer's digital addresses to genuine hardware storage addresses. frequently, the programmer is free of having to be in touch about the provision of archives storage. close some unused classes so as that extra memory is available.
