manic depression is another name for bipolar. It's kinda difficult to explain, but it's like one minute you're in a good mood, the next second you're just pissed off, then the next minute, you're sad, and you get extremely temperamental, If you think you are, you should go to a therapist or psychiatrist and explain the symptoms to him.

Bipolar Disorder (previously known as manic-depressive disorder) is characterized by highs (mania) and lows (depression). The cycles can last several days or several weeks (rarely cycling within the same day). Its more severe than just mood swings. People with mania have a decreased need for sleep. Its like they are running on an infinite battery. They'll start projects they never finish. They may be arrogant and mean. They may be angry and impulsive (like drinking or going on shopping sprees). Some people become hypersexual. They may talk quickly or just seem very hyperactive. So, when they cycle into the depressive phase, you can understand why its such a crash. People with Bipolar have Major Depressive Episodes. This may include feeling suicidal, being unable to get out of bed, not eating or sleeping, not going to work or school, just seeming run down, or not talking to others.
Bipolar disorder is rare, occurring in about 2% of the population, so you should consult with your physician or preferrably a psychiatrist or psychologist. Very often, depression is mistaken for Bipolar. People assume that if they are depressed and have mood swings, they are Bipolar. This is not the case. I've worked with several angry depressed people with mood swings who were not Bipolar. Again, you have to talk to your doctor.

Have you seen a Dr about it? If your really worried about it, you should do so. manic depression is now called bi-polar and they call it that because a person experiences extreme highs and extreme lows. They kind of bounce back and forth between the two points. Really, only a good phychiatrists/phychologists can diagnose this illness. And it's after taking a complete medical history on you and your family AND monitoring you and the ups and downs you may be having. Some famous persons like Patty Duke Astin have bi-polar and is being treat with lithium to control the symptoms. The only way you're going to find out is by getting into a mental health clinic and getting some help. Find out who does this in your area and call to see what it would take for you to get in to see someone. I have problems with major depression and sometimes I get scared that it could be bi-polar. I'm assured that it's not, that it's more due to my thyroid disease and my enviroment than anything else. I know some people with it and they have to take meds to control the manic episodes---which are usually something like anger outbursts.
Well, good luck to you. I hope you decide to get some help. It's all up to you....a dr once told me: be your own advocate! .

A manic depressive person is characterized by sharp, sudden and severe mood swings.
Depression can come from lots of things - and at this time of year, the decreased amount of sunlight can account for a lot of it, but nutrition, post christmas bills, a desire to make the new year a great one and then being daunted by the task can all be very real factors in very reasonable depression.
I have had great luck with herbal products to help with my depression over the years - but I have never sought a label. Depressed is not what you ARE it is a symptom to something else amiss in your life - and that could be something as easily correctible as your own thoughts and feelings.
I always want to turn to affirmations and visualizations first - but often times with depression it is better to start with simple meditation. Just clear and quiet your mind. Some people like to do that sitting or laying down - others do better when they clean out the garage by themselves.
From there I would simply try to monitor my thoughts and correct the negative ones. When I hear myself say "I am always so depressed" I say "No, I feel better every day. I create my own life and my own happiness everyday." When you settle down for bed and are laying there in the dark, imagine yourself happy, really happy, surrounded by people you love - everyone totally at ease. The clearer the picture and the more often you do these things the sooner the pattern will change in your mind and help you break free of any negative cycles you are in.
Additionally, some helpful herbs are SAMe, Kava Kava - even just extra magnesium (like blueberries or Epsom salt bath) and B vitamins. I also think very highly of Olive Oil used on the skin - particularly just under the ribs in the back where the adrenal glands are - that alone could help you to feel better. I use it everytime I get out of the shower.
To address the low sunlight issue, St. John's Wort can be a real friend if you get high quality that uses the right part of the plant. I will put links below to where i get these products myself if you are interested. I use these folks because I know their quality and knowledge of the herbs are top notch. Of course, it is always wise to consult a physician before you start any new herbs, particularly if you are already on medication.
I know it's long winded, but it is so easy to feel helpless and hopeless when we feel depressed and I wanted to give you as many options as I could think of - paritcularly things that you can do right now to feel better and empower yourself.
Peace!

Manic Depression or Bipolar Disorder is basically just another name for "mood swings". One minute You are happy, then You are not. Next You feel angry, and then You don't. Sound familiar? Contact Your local doctor or seek information from a reputable counseling organization. There is plenty of literature available on this subject and the library shelves are full of books about it.

Lame? What? Self-advocacy is lame? Trying to do something instead of sitting on your duff is courageous, first of all.
I know, because I had to do it. And I ain't done yet.
Listen, I was very nearly bi-polar (that's the new la-dee-da name now), with terrible mood swings (but not five times a day and not m inute-to-minute) and I was awake almost all of the time until I crashed. I couldn't concentrate on anything, couldn't do my job, cried non-stop during PMS, wanted to die then, then everyday.
And then they found my really whacked out thyroid levels.
And then they killed as much of the gland as they could.
And now I'm better.
And so, get tested for all kinds of hormonal and brain disorders that run around acting like totally mental problems.
It's not your fault, honey.
Get going.
You got this.

well it depends why you're depressed. call your friends and don't block yourself from communciation.
if you're depressed because you miss someone then think of a trait they thought you. for example if they taught you courage, in a time you need courage, think of that person and they'll fulfill you with courage. also remember that they wouldn't want you to spend your life in misery. they'll want you to make a difference in the world and change a person's life...
hope that helps =)

"Manic depression" is now referred to as "bipolar disorder".
If you have frequent, uncontrollable mood swings, you may be bipolar, due to a chemical imbalance in your brain.
This is a treatable condition.
You really need a professional evaluation to be certain, though.

Severe mood swings for no apparent reason.
You might go from elation to rage and anger to sadness and crying to joy and excitement from moment to moment.
