I also want to know if it is possible to get parts to build a flip-card clock.

I'd never heard of a "flip-card' clock before but the DH says it has individual flat pieces with hours or minutes (or date, I presume) which are hinged at the top. As the minutes go by, the next minute tile is flipped down over the previous one, etc.

He hasn't hear of those as wall units (only for desktops), but guess you could make them larger if you could buy the mechanism somewhere... maybe Edmund Scientific?
The mechanism almost sounds like a similar one to the paper-punched rolls that used to be used for player pianos (or maybe even for making textile patterns, etc.) or a cam or something, but I think you'd probably have to either know a bit about watchmaking and electronics to make your own, or perhaps buy a small one and see if you could adapt it to larger tiles, etc.

Here are lots of sites that have flip clocks, and some may have mechanisms too:

I belong to a poker club and I've made two large poker chip clock for the club i bought the works at wal mart and cut the clock out of wood, but you can go to any crafts store and they have all kinds of stuff to make clocks out of. paints, wood, clock works ask anyone there they will show you a lot of ways. hope you make one it is cool to see what you've done. and since i made mine I've had several people ask me to sell them one so who knows it could turn into a business! good luck and have fun.

your local michaels or any craft store chain should have the parts. most staff are very helpful just explain what you are making and they will guide you. i am unsure if michaels or another sells online but they do offer project instructions.
