Yes, we do. Always have. I'm Canadian, my husband is American however, both of our families both practice this custom. I think it is disrespectful for people to walk in to a house with shoes that have been god only know's where. It's polite and it shows you are very respectful to be their guest.

I always have people take their shoes off in my house. The first thing I do when I get home is take off my shoes. When people come over they usually take off their shoes if they are close friends or have visited before so they know about the no shoes house rule. For first time visitors many will see the pile of shoes at the door and take theirs off too. Others will ask if they need to take off their shoes. Some miss both clues and I just say "Oh, we don't allow shoes inside the house." Whenever I invite people over for the first time I try to be outside when they arrive. When they get there I greet them outside and invite them inside. On my way in I take off my shoes and my guests usually follow as they see me taking my shoes off. I have had people come over for the first time and find out about the shoes off rule and now everytime they visit they will be standing at the door in their socks. A couple of people that have come over have liked the shoes off atmosphere and institued it in their house. Now they make everyone take off their shoes too.

Yes I do. I have white carpet. I consider it rude of them not to take off their shoes. Likewise when I go over to someone else's house, I always remove my shoes.
