Also I already work for this company and know a great deal about the new position i am applying for, so I probably will not have many questions to ask; is it OK if pay rate is the only question I have?

If you're interviewing for an in-house position, your HR department should be available to provide you with broad job specs, including salary range.

If the information is not available through HR, and you believe that your interview has been successful and you've got at least a shot at the job, when the interviewer asks if you have any questions, you can ask what the compensation RANGE is for that job. Introduce the subject diplomatically (by asking if you could pose a question) if the interviewer forgets.

By the way, the only questions you should ever pose are ones to which you really want an answer. Turn your lack of questions into an asset by pointing out your years of employment with the company and/or the research you've done on the position for which you're applying

Remember: You're there for a job not your health. It would look really strange if you didn't want to know salary ranges.

However, you'll want to defer detailed discussion of benefits, etc. until a job offer is on the horizon.

There are some people who think that you should never ask this question in an interview but there are others who think that you should. If you do ask about salary and benefits, it’s a good idea not to ask that as your first question. In most instances, though, a potential employer will tell you about salary and benefits without you even having to ask.

I don't think that it's appropriate to bring up salary until they offer you the position.
