Lol. I hate it when they do that. I hate being in the front so it gets me all nervous. I also dont like it when they pull out chairs for us. They probably just want to see our @$$ lol.

It is good manners. It is if the "lady" should fall the manly man would rescue her. That is why mannered men always lead the way down the stairs. Personally, I like those little things.
But I do know they are not above using manners as an excuse to check out a "lady's" as-s, lingerie, etc.

it was an item in the Victorian manners 'manual' to say so...the rule was always going before woman in the stairs, to "clean" the way for them and avoid making them feel accosed or anything. I guess its been around for so long that it is pre-seted in some people...that people will probably also let you walk near the wall side of the streets (thatwise ladies didnt get dirty with mud the horses shoot from the streets)

It comes from a time past, when women were thought of as delicate and defenceless creatures.
It is the same as walking on the side of the lady nearest the road,to protect her clothes from being splattered with mud. Also for her protection against run away carriages and to avoid having to brush by other men.
Letting the lady go first through a door and up stairs, ensured that you would be right behind her to save and protect, should she loose balance.
" If you should be required to escort a Lady up a grand staircase.
The correct position to place yourself, is one step behind and one pace to her left hand side, while ascending the staircase.
On descending, the Gentleman places himself politely, one step ahead and one pace to the right hand side.
Being always in readiness to assist her, if she should be unfortunate to meet with any hazard."
These gems of information come from a book ,circa,1840s titled,
"A Gentleman in Modern Society".written by A.W.Thorpe and printed in the Colony of New South Wales. Now Australia.
Sorry guys,I know you would all love a copy but I think it may be out of print.

It is the polite thing to do. But it also gives the follower a good chance to girl watch. There's a old song about "
Backfield in Motion" a foot ball term that men use to describe a female's rear end when she is moving. It applies here. LOL,
Oh, dear, that is twice in 24 hours I have given away my age, oh, well, I am that age when men no longer care if my backfield is going anywhere.

Either brought up well to be a gentleman or
To look up skirts as dirty young or old men or
In case something BAD lies ahead, the woman gets it first?
(I always wondered about that last one!!!!)

It's called manners - should the lady fall - we are there to catch you - and it's why we go down stairs first!
