I believe it would depend solely on the number of individuals living on my island.

Less than 20 - use a communistic society, sharing all items, and working toward a common goal. The island resources I would be most concerned with would be predominantly necessity items, such as fish and farming. This is based on the assumption that there is no import/ export, since the island is, after all, remote. Each person has assigned duties, be it toolbuilding, fishing/hunting, building of shelters, gardening, clothmaking, etc...

20-100 people - At this point, I would focus more on a bartering system, where once again, individuals focus on primary goals, but also work with more focus toward luxury items as well. Each person produces items and trades in order to focus on self sufficient behavior.

100+ people - Create a modified capitalistic economy based off of a rare good on the island. Paper money would be unrealistic, but any rare item will do, such as particular stones or minerals. A bank of sorts must be created in order to regulate this minimalized economy.

Environmental considerations need to be a focus at all levels, mostly since, on a small island, resources are limited, and must be preserved. I have based my answers on the idea of a society that is essentially cut off from society.

We'd form a communist economic system and divide up the entire island equally. Then we'd divide up anything produced, from each according to his ability to each according to his need. That way if bill risked his neck killing a wild boar he'd have to share it equally with the rest of us that spent the day catching some zzz's.

Eventually no body would do anything because if you produced something it would just be taken away from you and divided amongst everyone else. So we would all starve while waiting for someone else to put something on the table, the end.
