For me, there's 4 guitarists that can make it as the greatest guitarist of all time, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen. They are great influences to guitarists even today and they were all very innovative. They also showed us some things that were never done before with a guitar.

Acoustic Guitar- Monte Montgomery
harmonizes like no other.

Electric Guitar- Jimi Hendrix
his signature licks are still powerful in 2007 as they were in the 60's and 70's.

Jimi Hendrix, slowhand Clapton, carlos santana and Jim Root from Slipknot i would have 2 say jimmi 1st because it is easy 2 see wht has has done to the rock world he transfromes it with the fast fingers. Next clapton because of his ability to hjit everynote everytime nomatter what, he always puts on a show in concert. Santana because he brought his lighter side of rock music and spansh music and mixed them together to create a great blend, pure genious. lastly i say jim root because if you pay atention to slipknot which i do because i am a maggot you will notice his hardcore sound and unmistakeable style and he never takes any credit for how amazing he really is

I feel kinda stupid that I can't remember his name but my vote definitely goes to the guitarist who has been with Aerosmith from the beginning. He has long black hair and is probably in his 50's. He is completely into the music and moves his fingers on the guitar better than anyone I've ever seen. Good Hands!!!

I was going to answer with "George Thorogood" as anyone who can make a career in rock and roll with only knowing three chords MUST be great, but I thought better of this.

My vote is for Eric Clapton. "Slowhand" was part of one of the most influential rock and roll bands of the day (Cream) and went on to continually survive for many years as a solo artist. Over his career, he has played with many of the best, has been an inspirational singer and songwriter, helped to keep the blues alive and well, battled personal demons and served as a role model for many up and coming artists.

That's a tough question. Some names off the top of my head that come to mind are:
Buckethead - Songs To Listen To: Really anything, this guy is unbelievably fast
Jimmi Hendrix - Songs To Listen To - Machine Gun, All Along the Watchtower
Kirk Hammet - Metallica - Songs to Listen To: One. Ride The Lightning
Dimebag Darrel - Pantera - Songs to Listen To: Floods, Cowboys From Hell
Eddie Van Halen - Van Halen - Songs to Listen To: Eruption
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Song to Listen To: Texas Floods, Scuttle Buttin
Alex Lifeson - Rush -Song to Listen To: YYZ, Workin Man
Slash - Guns N Roses - Songs To Listen To: Sweet Child O' Mine, November Rain (great solos)

All of them are very innovative and have a unique style, really just depends on your preference.

Thats just off the top of my head, probably forgetting some, hard for me to narrow it down to just one.

But if I had to pick just one, definately Hendrix, Probably the most influential guitarist in my list and could make the guitar makes all kinds of sounds you wouldn't think possible to make with a guitar,
hell he even played a right handed guitar backwards, thats talent!

I definately recommend listening to all those songs though, great solos and riffs in all of them.

Jimi Hendrix, because he did things with a guitar no one had ever done before. He was passionate and invigorating to listen to, and he's inspiring so many other guitarists.

I would say Carlos Santana, David Gilmore, Jimi Hendrix, and maybe Jeff Beck. All very different and all brilliant. Santana is my personal fave, but that is just my own opinion. I just love his sound. Oh yeah ... also Brian May.
