My son is eleven months old and has been on many diferent formula's. He spits up alot less then he used to. He is drinks enfamil AR. His doctor says to gradually swith to whole milk at eleven months. I'm worried his reflux will get worse. So far after three days he spits up about 2 tablespoons after each bottle with whole milk. He doesn't seem ready to switch to sippy cup. He loves his bottle. THANKS

My son had severe reflux when he was an infant. At about a year I did switch him to regular milk and he was fine. It seemed at a year old his reflux got better when he was introduced to regular milk and was on "table" food regularly. most all kids grow out of the refluxing stage about that time or a little later. Their systems are more matured to handle the solid foods and milk. and definatley try the sippy cup. it slows down the ingestion of the milk and lets their stomach react to it before it fills up and refluxes it back out.

Many doctors now say not to switch from milk to formula until around 18 months, so if you are concerned don't switch! Really breastmilk or formula should be continued until a child weans between age 2-4. At that time they no longer need milk as part of their regular diet (don't get me wrong I love milk BUT milk really isn't very healthy for humans).

Also don't worry about the sippy cup. Sippy cups are really worse for teeth than bottles. Bottles are designed by dentists for long term use to prevent dental problems, sippy cups are not. But a soft spouted sippy is the same as a bottle.

Really a lot of breastfeeders breastfeed that long and we don't start pumping it and putting it in sippy cups ;-)

My son had mild reflux also and was on Enfamil AR. When I switched him to whole milk he was gassy and constipated. I ended up putting him on Enfamil Next Step (Soy) until he was about 23 months. The Next Step formula can be used until 24 months. He still doesn't fair well with whole milk so he uses Soy.

I wouldn't switch too soon. My baby had REALLY bad reflux, and my doctor recommended the same, that I should switch her to whole at around 11 months, and I did so and she did get really sick for a while...so much that I had to stop.

Make your decision based on his health reaction, though (as hard as it is). I know he probably wont want that sippy cup :) But don't force the milk thing....take him abck to the doctor if it gets worse.

my baby is 11 mths--turing 1 in 2wks and i just switched him. i tried whole milk 1st, but it gave him bad diarrhea, so switched him back to soy and he is fine. if you are thinking of trying whole milk try slowly by putting a couple ounces at a time in his bottle with his formula.

our son had reflux problem too and our doctor told us to slowly introduce whole milk, she said to mix the whole milk in with the formula, so i did that and he did fine, then we started to give him whole milk alone to him and he did fine, he didnt have any problems you never know till you try it out and see.
