Most definitely rent a "Rug Doctor" steam cleaner. The products to use with it are sold were you rent them. Follow the instructions very carefully and you can't go wrong.

They have powerful suction to withdraw the cleansing solution and the rinse water from the carpet. I have used this method many times and it is totally satisfactory.

To make sure the carpet is fresh-smelling, I rinse it two times. It is surprising what remaining soil comes out in the second rinse. Good Luck.

Believe it or not, Clorox 2 in a carpet shampooer works wonders, and smells better than carpet shampoo. Of course, with all the worries about allergens and mites the steam cleaner might be the most effective.

Go rent a carpet shampooer. I like the Hoover shampoo. Or take the easy way out and have the carpet cleaned professionally.

A steam cleaner. If you have pets, you can get a special soap for animal smells. But definately use a steam cleaner, not a shampooer, a steam cleaner cleans it deeper.
