I'm going to guess that the brake lights are always on then. And when you apply the brakes on the truck, the brake lights on the trailer turn off? Sounds like the wiring off of the truck is wrong. Pretty easy to check. Use a volt meter on the brake light leads on the harness off of the truck. Have someone apply the brakes. If you're getting 12 volts constantly off of the brake lights and turns off when brakes are applied, the harness has to be changed. Sounds like your getting a cross feed from the marker lights and the brake lights. Tally Ho.

You will need to reverse the wires at the trailer lights and make sure the light brackets and the trailer is properly grounded through the hitch.I had a problem like this and once I switched the wires around it fixed the problem.

hi,i'd examine the cord coding on both vehicle.. & trailer..examine the grounding of lights on trailer. I f it is old trailer, rust would nicely be a element of no lights.examine wiring on trailer even if that's properly stressed out to truck. examine bulbs on trailer if good. Is hitch sparkling ? good success

do not ground thru the hitch. use a dedicated wire. trailers that ground thru the hitch blow bulbs twice as often. temporarily use a jumper cable connected to the bumper on one end and to the trailer on the other. that will assure you ground is actually good. if theres still a problem, your wiring is wrong.

check the wire, there may be a short somewhere. a mechanic will be able to tell you this pretty easily, trailers have pretty rudimentary wiring systems.
