at school we were forced to call it soccer as there were so many "footballs" gaelic, rugby, etc so either way i actually really dont care about that one.
i play, played football, but its a soccer club, or soccer am which BTW am watching as i type.
i do have a massive problem with an american saying the word soccer in their horrible accent.

It is Football. However, when the original game of football split into the separate camps of the beautiful game and egg-chasing they were called 'Association Football' and 'Rugby Football' respectively. The term 'soccer' is a bastardised and abbreviated version of 'Association Football'.
American Football or 'Gridiron' was developed from Rugby Football or 'Peanut Hugging' in an effort to make it easier to understand (well what would you expect?) and both games are played by men with peculiarly shaped balls.
There may well have been some sort of Health & Safety consultant involved in providing the helmets and padding for the American version.
Mr Beckham will call football whatever he needs to for his $250million and who can blame him!

It's soccer to us Americans. That's how we know it. It's football to most other countries in the world. Americans call it soccer cuz they stole the name from the football and used it as their own for a sport where big blown-up players tackle each other down. I myself don't like American football. But I love football aka soccer!!!

IT was originally called Football, and only changed when Rugby was invented.
Football then became known as 'Soccer' as an abbreviated of the word 'Association' as it is formally called 'Association Football', whereas 'Rugby Football' became abbreviated to 'Rugger' (which is how it is still known in British public schools).
However, for the Americans to refer to American football as 'Football' utterly takes the pi$$ - their game is a non-contact derivative of hair-braiding, it doesn't involve the foot and their ball isn't even a proper ball - football? Who do they think they're kidding! They'll be trying to sign an ex-England Captain next, and paying him more money then I've got sense........

The full name of the sport is Association Football which is shortened to football. Soccer is really just a sort of nickname for the sport like American Football is sometimes called gridiron.

It's Football, has been from the start, ever since the game was invented and will carry on being called football. Gaelic Football is Gaelic Football and American Football is that game where you run with the ball in your hands to one end of a pitch and kick at an elevated goal. Isn't that rugby! American Football is rugby with shoulder pads and shouldn't be called football, It should be called "pansy yanks running in a field wearing body armour because they are too scared to hurt someone in case they sue them game"
