If it didn't, then it would be lip, and that already has a meaning. Whose cruel idea was it for people with lisps to use more s's thatn the average citizen?lol

seriously! i have a lisp. its not a big dorky lisp. its slightly there. but when i say 'i have a lisp' people always agree! grrrr

I think it is just a word derived from the hissing sound that lispers make.
