Are 1 in 10 people gay? That sounds like a lot, don't you think? Can the number of gay people really be that high?

If I go to a concert where there are 10,000 people, does it mean that 1,000 of those people are gay?

Haha! I should've been more specific about the type of concert. :D

The Indiana University Kinsey studies reported 10% of males being more or less exclusively homosexual and 2% to 6% of females being more or less exclusively homosexual; a 1990 study (Homosexuality/Heterosexuality by McWhirter, Sanders, and Reinisch) stated 13.95% of males and 4.25% of females had "extensive" or "more than incidental" homosexual experience; and a 1993 study (The Janus Report on Sexual Behavior) found 9% of men and 5% of women were involved in frequent or ongoing homosexual experiences, but only 4% of men and 2% of women called themselves homosexual (This difference could be attributed as those who were 'out' and those who were 'closeted').

It appears that the number of male homosexuals is approximately 10.98% and the number of female homosexuals is approximately 4.42%. It also appears that only half of those who are truly homosexual are "out".

So if you go to concert where there are 10,000 people and if the assumption is made that the attendance is ½ women and ½ men; statistically you would be likely to find 275 openly gay men and 275 closeted gay men (for a total of 550, which would be 10.98% of the males at the concert) and 110 openly gay women and 110 closeted gay women (for a total of 220, which would be 4.42% of the females at the concert).

Total number of theoretical gay and lesbian attendees would be 770 (which excludes the number of bisexuals attending).

That is a really old study and was considered accurate for a long time.

The answer is gonna vary depending on who you ask, what study they are quoting, who funded the study and so on.

I have seen one study that states that 1 person in 4 is gay or bisexual. Another states only 1 in 30 is gay. Who knows. Especially now with a new category cropping up of asexual.

Personally, from the people I know, work with, went to school with and so on...being gay myself....I would say probably about 1 in 20 is gay or bisexual. Although you can find a lot of straight men nowadays who with enough alcohol are willing to 'experiment' for one night.

I've heard 12%. I believe it. I have been attracted to women before, and I know many of my friends that are. I think it is about time that society really became more open and accepting about differences in sexuality - as long as you are not harming or exploiting anyone, there shouldnt' be any problem. Human sexuality is flexible. It is spread out over a spectrum and is not so black and white. There are straights, and ten tere are shades of grey in between, such as ppl who are a little bicurious, through to bisexual, to mostly gay, to totally gay. It's not so cut and dried, so it's hard to say there is exactly 10% of gay ppl. But unfortunateky, gays are often made to feel like second rate citizens for feelings which they do not choose or control!! Saying homosexuality is a choice is the height of ignorance and makes me mad.

In a concert of 10,000 people 1000 would be gay, unless its a Tori Amos concert, then the number would be higher, at least thats what my lesbian friends tell me.

Well, it used to be supposedly true that 75% of men cheated on their wives, whereas only 5% of women cheated on thier husbands.
Suddenly, women's lib came out and women admitted to even amounts to men.
But it wasn't so much about what they did, as it was about how much women were willing to admit to things, even on an anonymous survey.
Maybe 1 in 20 is gay, maybe 1 in 6 is gay,
maybe there are confused people who aren't even sure.
Oh, and hey, we aren't all totally male or totally female either!
There are people born both, neither.
There are cultures that have many more than two concepts of gender.
Read up on it.
It's fascinating and horrendous what our "modern" societies do to people.

3. depends were you live. Big cities tend to have more.
4. Again, it depends. A Cher or Elton John concert.Sure.
5. Does it really matter? I mean really? Could be worse. 1 in 10 could also be Terrorist. I'm running for the hills.
