The document was written, signed, and had notarized by my ex, promising to pay me what he owes me in a reasonable amount of time which has been over a year ago. I have written him numerous letters and he hasn't replied.

A notarized document is a binding contract.

Depending on what state you are in, the fact that it was notarized may be irrelevant since it is in writing and bears a signature. To be notarized, usually requires a non-party witness (someone who will not benefit if a promise is in default) Having something notarized just simply creates a registry of the date for the document. If the promissory note were written on the back of a matchbook cover or a napkin, (assuming it was legible) and signed, its legal. ( I wouldn't recommend a napkin though)

the words "reasonable amount of time" is to vague for a court to rule on.you should have given him a deadline or obtained something as collateral. might be best to move on.thus the word ex.. don't ever lend your ex money. if you lent him money while married im sorry but the marriage was binding as shared money.

It's enough to stand up in court! Have him summoned to court! It's a legal binding agreement! I did that once and thought I was going to get out of it! OOPS! LOL

You got a case. Go to your county seat and inquire how to initiate a small claims case
