Austin is a really kid-friendly city. Lots of restaurants have good deals for eating with kids; lots of neighborhood parks, lots of reading hours at bookstores and the libraries. Lots of free kids activities in the summer. Bookmark the Austin Chronicle website and check it often in the summer. http://www.austinchronicle.com

The Central Market at 38th and Lamar has a playscape, too.

Zilker Park has the Zilker Zephyer, a little train you and the kids can ride. I LOVED it when I was a toddler. After the train ride, head north from the playscape (also very cool) at Zilker, past the canoe rentals and feed the ducks some bread crumbs.

The botannical gardens are right across the street:

And the Austin Nature and Science Center is next to the gardens; it's a great place to visit--like a miniature zoo with really well-trained kid-friendly tour leaders.

Then head to Book People at 6th and Lamar for the coolest kids' books selection anywhere with a mini-play area in the middle of the picture books. Upcoming events: http://www.bookpeople.com/coe.html

Also catch story times at the Libraries:

Further south is the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center (really only fun for a 3-yr-old if there is an event):

The Austin Children's Museum really is a lot of fun for toddlers:

You HAVE to go to Amy's ice cream--the servers throw the ice cream in the air and ham it up for kids. The location at Burnet and Allandale has a great playscape, too.

During the summer there are lots of free screenings of kid-friendly movies--check the Chronicle for times and locations under "special screenings" on the website--mainpage, right under film listings and the "new reviews."

The Austin zoo, while a drive, is actually really cool, especially considering what a small city we are:
