We earned the right to put our flag there, we spent the money and designed the technology and built the vehicles to go there first, so why can't we leave our flag? I'm sure if her country was first to get there they would have at a minimum put their flag on the moon.
We didn't decorate the moon, we just left a sign that we were there.

Have you been to the moon? Rhetorical question :p

Not many of us have, as not many of us are multi-millionaires. But, your friend said us "Americans" are selfish because "NASA" put the flag on the moon, which I am pretty sure they removed. Basically that logic doesnt flow well, as NASA would be the selfish ones.

However, I realize what you were asking :p Yes, I do think that its a bit selfish to put your nations flag on the moon. Nobody owns it, and I really hope that if we do colonize the moon they wont cut it into pieces by "nations". Simply just refer to it as "the moon", and not "United Moon of America". However, I realize that sadly everyone will claim their own part, if they can get their hands on it.

Oh, and its definately not racist by any means. Its not like they slammed a confederate flag on the sucker.

I agree with the fact that we should not decorate the moon by putting our flag on it. I disagree with the fact that america is racist because we put our flag on the moon! I think your friend should watch what she says because it sounds like she is insulting you.

When we arrived at the moon, we were in somewhat of a race with the Soviet Union to see who would be the first to get there. So it was natural for us to put our flag up and in a way rub it in on the Soviets. It is also somewhat of tradition. For instance, when explorers found new land, it was always common for a flag to be raised. The reason you friend feels that we Americans are selfish is because it is very typical for a foreigner to feel that way. Foreigners (europeans especially) always feel a need to criticize Americans. However, next time your friend is criticizing the United States, always bring up the fact that people are in line trying to get into our country, and where else in the world is there a huge immigration problem like ours because illegal immigrants want the American dream.

I can see her point. However, it doesn't make americans as a whole selfish and racist though. Infact i don't really think it's racist at all. If any other country had gotten there first they would have put their flag up. I'm sure when the british arrived in australia for the first time they stuck a union jack in the ground.

Getting to the moon was a great and unheard of accomplishment. They put our flag up representing America. That is freakin amazing!!! That doesn't mean that we think we own it now. Come on. Aren't you excited and proud that our flag is on the moon? I really think that your friend is the one who is prejudiced or racist. I agree that no one should hurt it or pollute it but exploring it and marking where someone put their feet on it is a timeless treasure. Priceless.

we put a flag on the moon because we were there. we did not put a plauqe that says the moon belongs to america. the russians were there too and they could have and should have left their flag. also, the moon has a million craters. one little hole from a flag is not going to hurt it.

I do think it was quite pretentious for the "US-ans" to appear to claim the Earth's satellite as their property by choosing the US flag versus a more international one, like the UN flag, for example.

It's similar to the impression they give when they call themselves "Americans." When is someone going to come up with an appropiate term for people born in the US?

An American, not from the US =)

that's not racist... being racist is despising someone because of their skin color and treating them differently if they were another color. it's sad but it's true

and ur friend from another country is selfish for thinking that because if it was her country that had her flag on the moon she would not be complaining

hope it helps... let your heart guide you =)
