Lymph nodes swell in response to infection or trauma. There could be an underlying problem that is presenting both of these symptoms simultaneously. When I had a severe case of mononucleosis several years ago, the lymph nodes swelled in my neck. Within about a day or so later, the muscles in the back of my neck began spasming so badly that my neck would completely draw back; so much so that I couldn't get my chin down to my chest. The doctor tested for meningitis (it was that bad), but that was ruled out. He said it was likely related to the mono infection. That's my personal experience.
