and my house is 4200 square feet. I am moving into either a 6,000 square feet house or a 9,000 square feet house. I don't get the whole square footage thing. What are square feet anyways?

A square foot is what you would have if there was a square that measure 1 foot x 1 foot, i.e., it would be one foot long on each side. A room that was 10 feet wide and 20 feet long would be 200 square feet. Your 4200 sf house is equivalent in size to one big room that measures about 65 feet on each side. As you would guess intuitively, the 9000 sf house would be more than twice as big as the 4200 sf house.
