in the movie "because of winn dixie", how did opal get her name??

I'm not sure if it's ever mentioned in the movie. I choose to think that her deceased mother chose it because it means, "precious stone", and her baby was precious to her.

her name is opal because her parents named her that duh i mean not everyone has a reson for naming ther kid a certin name they may think its a good name durh!
