Agreed, being part of the subculture of course, and not being one of the many Manson worshiping Baby-bats, I feel that as goths (reguardless of how you identify yourself) we must show the world, we arent how they persive us, we are simply normal people attracted to the beauty in darkness, who (generally) dress the part, and listen to the music that expresses this.

We must show the masses who we are, and take voice when someone from of our own (or someone masquerading as one of use, i.e. a poser) does something that looks bad upon all of us, for example Columbine, there was a huge backlash against Goth, disreguarding the fact that the shooters were not goth, nor did they identify with goth.

However, we must also show outrage at what the mainstream makes of us, with an angry, firm, yet gentle and kind hand, we must guide those who stereotype us as devil-worshipers, or madmen, or killers, or anything else, inform them, that yes, there may be some of these people in our subcultures, but it is not something we accept. or advocate. Also in our outrage, we must show our anger towards those who actively, or inactively persecute us (i.e. the flyer put out by the Westboro Baptist Church, or those in the media who misrepresent us)

We must show respect for humankind, to show that we are not all evil, though this does not mean bend over society, but do not support our stereotype of the angsty teen wanna-be satanist.

Confront the issue of goths being confused as Satanists, and the issue of Satanists being confused as Devil-Worshippers. (and I will send a link later clarifying true Satanism) However let it be known that theyre may be Gothic Satanists, and there may be Satanic "jocks" there may be Satanic farmers, Satanic C.E.Os, Satanic "preps" etc, I say this because I recognise myself as both Gothic and a Satanist, however when discussing my beliefs, I always take it upon myself to show that the majority of my fellow Goths are actually Christian and Normal Athiestic
Here is the link explaining true Satanism, reguardless of the fact that it is not related to Goth ( http://www.freewebs.com/satanismexplanation/ )

Also goth.net and Wikipedias articles on Goth sum it up fairly well, but nothing can ever beat getting a goths opinion straight from him or her

A notable thing for you to look up is Voltaire's apperance on Fox News explaining Goth

The important thing is to present yourself to people as a positive member of society. Even though I have purple hair (which isn't an option with this hairstyle on Yahoo), tons of piercings and always am wearing lots of black eyeliner, I try to show the world that my people aren't so bad. I'm always extra-polite in the grocery store, etc. Maybe if enough of us show the world that we're not so bad, the normal people will take notice.

labels are immature(: Goth: now and again stands for "gothic" a form of music. Emo: stands for the music style emotive hardcore, emote hardcore, or emocore.. It has no longer some thing to do with being suicidal or slicing your self, those are authentic issues no longer a label. it truly is not any longer a mode both, that is only what a variety of of those stereotyping idiots favor you to imagine. same element for screamo, it truly is an emotive hardcore sub-style. And emotive hardcore is a sub-style from hardcore music. Skater: a stupid label Punk: form of music scene: a stupid label Preppy: a stupid label

Changed quite a bit. It used to be something very very different. It was a lifestyle. It was music. It was bands. It was concerts. Hell, it was british. Now, all you have to do to be "goth" is to wear black alot and have really pale skin. To anyone who knows what a gothic person is, these little kiddies are called "posers." To those posers who like to listen to shitty whiny music, then they often get labeled with "emo." It's really a shame what the word has been twisted into.

I used to think Goth = satanism or vampirism, because of all the black, until I started speaking with people.

Its amazing how you can develop bigotries without even realizing it and it's equally amazing how you can eliminate those bigotries by just asking intelligent questions.

In general what comes to mind is the idea of death and dying.

I think goth.net is somewhat more accurate, but thank you for bringing this to people's attention. :)
