I'm moving into a new apartment and me and the other person are deciding on who gets what bedroom. Both are pretty equal in size. One is just longer and narrow and the other is more square shaped. My roommate would like the square bedroom because she thinks it's larger and she is the one who found the apartment. I didn't mind until I realized the other bedroom is actually smaller than my current bedroom and it would require me possibly having to get rid of two pieces of furniture in my bedroom. We spoke about it today and she said she didn't want me to have to do that, but she still hung on to the fact that she'd like the "larger" bedroom. Bottom line is I have larger furniture that might not fit in the long and narrow bedroom. If I take the square bedroom I can keep everything which I'd like to do for storage purposes. Is she right that since she found the apartment, she should get which bedroom she likes? If not, how can I politely say that I need the square bedroom?

I would pay more if the bedroom was larger. But the square footage is the same. They are just different in shape.

Either go rock, paper, scissors, or better yet, pay a little bit more rent.

Are you splitting the rent 50/50? My friends ran into a situation like that and they decide to figure out the square feet for each bedroom. Figure out how much you would pay more for the larger bedroom. If one bedroom was 10' and the other one was 20', one person would pay twice as much rent. Are you willing to pay more rent then her to have the larger bedroom?

Wow... if you are having a hard time communicating with her now, what on earth are you thinking about sharing a space with her for? Wait til you have to compromise on paying bills, chores, noise levels, and other issues. If I were you, either get smaller furniture or an easier roommate to communicate with.
