Ed and Dave are going to divide a cash prize of $14,000 in a ratio of 3 to 4. How much will Dave receive?

divide the pot into 7 parts. One take 3 parts and one take 4 parts.

14,000 / 7 = 2000.
one take 6000, the other take 8000.

ratio of 3:4 means ed gets 3/7 & dave gets 4/7
3/7 *$14,000=$6,000
4/7 *$14,000=$8,000

Dave gets

4/(3+4) = 4/7 of the prize.

So he gets (4/7)(14000) =$8,000

3x + 4x = 14000
7x = 14000
x = 2000
