Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini. When his best friend, a young clergyman, is killed in a mockery of a duel by an arrogant noble, just to quiet his eloquent expressions of democratic ideals, Andre-Louis Moreau vows revenge. From that point, through meteoric careers as a consummate actor and scenario writer, then as a fencing master, and finally a politician, the brilliant Moreau keeps thwarting the aims of the aristocratic Marquis de la Tour d'Azyr. However, the nobleman causes pain to Moreau as well, and the time must come when the two will meet to settle their enmity once and for all. You are not likely to guess how their confrontation finally turns out. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, this swashbuckling novel is exciting throughout, and it presents one of the most dashing heroes in fiction, a man who can fight equally well with his mind, his mouth, his pen, and his sword, a man who stirs up events wherever he goes.

The Gift of the Magi,From the cabby's seat,Last leaf all by the same author are terrific stories.
Count of Montecristo by Alexander Dumas. The hero is Edmond Dantés, a young French sailor who, falsely accused of treason, is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of Château d'If. After staging a dramatic escape he sets out to discover the fabulous treasure of Monte Cristo and catch up with his enemies. A novel of enormous tension and excitement, Monte Cristo is also a tale of obsession and revenge, with Dantés, believing himself to be an `Angel of Providence', pursuing his vengeance to the bitter end before realizing that he himself is a victim of fate. The author did a great job describing the emotions of the prisoner.Disbelief, denial, self pity, madness, apathy and finally hope. For God's sake don't see any of the movies based on the book. They don't do justice to the book.

I remember this really good book I read in like 7th grade...it's called "Searching for David's Heart" by Cherie Bennett. I think it's actually a movie now and was aired on ABC Family. It's just the best book you will ever read. And I really think that if you pass up the chance to read this then you're really missing out.
I also loved "Where the red fern grows" by Wilson Rawls. Its a book about a boy who wants 2 coon dogs, but his parents are poor. He finds an ad in the paper for two pups for 50 bucks. He works for 2 years and saves up the money. He travels out into the city to get his pups. He trains em and they become the best coon huntin dogs. In the end, the pups died( lil ann, the girl, died because she couldnt live w/o old dan) and old dan died after he had a fight with another animal. Where they were burried, a red fern grew. Its really a sad story of never giving up. I loved it a lot.

I know a gazillion good books, so it's hard to just pick out one to tell you about, since you don't tell me any of your preferences in reading material! But here's one I think everyone can enjoy:
"How I Paid for College: A Novel of Sex, Friendship, Theft, and Musical Theater" by Mark Acito. It centers around Edward, a high school senior in the 80's, whose father is refusing to pay for his college education to Julliard. He's got to find a way to finance it, and he'll try anything, with his kooky friends, his sweet girlfriend, the cute jock he can't help but drool over, and a couple of people I won't mention (don't want to spoil it). It's immensely funny, as Edward is the perfect narrator- witty and bright in his delivery, but real, and the situational humor is just as good, too. It's hilarious, sexy, and kooky, but has a good story behind it. I enjoyed it immensely and I bet you might too!
Whatever you choose, happy reading!

the Emperor series, by Conn Iggulden.
1. The Gates of Rome
2. The Death of Kings
3. The Field of Swords
4. The Gods of War
It's basically the life of Julius Caesar, fictionalized around historical events by the author. The story is VERY good. The best books I have ever read (Although I still have to read books 3 and 4). Honestly. Read them. Gates of Rome was a bestseller, I know that. Dunno bout the others, but I liked Death of Kings a little more than Gates of Rome because it kept me at the edge of my seat.
