The feud started when Kobe had an injured knee and was involved in his trial during the preaseaon of the 2003-04 season. When reporters asked Shaq if not having the whole team together, Shaq told them that the "team was already there", implying that Kobe wasn't part of it.

O'Neal then added more fuel to the fire by telling the media that Kobe should pass more, especially with the knee injury. With this comment and the prior statement Shaq made to the media, Kobe said to the public that he didn't appreciate such open advice from Shaq and that he shouldn't be telling him how to play the guard position.

The next comment that stepped the feud up even more was when Shaq replied to the media that he felt he could say as he wished regarding the Lakers because it was "his" team. Bryant countered by saying that O'neal wasn't a great leader, arrived at training camp out of shape and questioned the seriousness of the injuries Shaq claimed to have (Kobe basically meant that Shaq was using injuries to hide his poor conditioning). Kobe also said that he had received a lot of support about his upcoming trial from everyone on the team apart from O'neal.

The arguments pretty much cooled down during the acutal season, but came to a head after the team lost the NBA finals to the Pistons. With Phil Jacksons contract expiring, Shaq was unhappy that the team didn't notify him in person that Jackson wouldn't be returning. Shaq demanded a trade and Kobe was able to test free agency.

Some speculate that the reason Shaq suddenly became so hostile to Kobe was that he had heard that Kobe had said that Shaq was paying hush money to women that had affairs with during his trial.

From there, the feud hasn't really been much more than media hype. Forced questions during interviews and a schedule that pits the former teammates on Chrismas day every year was just an artificial way to keep the fire burning.

Kobe basically told the world that Shaq cheated on his wife. And that the reason he gets away with it was because Shaq gives his mistresses diamonds ear rings to keep quiet. True story.
