My work is having a "mandatory" employee meeting this Sunday, that I have no intention of attending. I have been to several of these meetings and there is always a lot of bitching with nothing really being resolved or acomplished. I left my boss a not letting him know that I would not be attending because I would be out of town. I am now expecting him to call me. Why can I say I am leaving town? (It must sound important and believable!)

Was this meeting set within the past couple of days/hours? If so, just tell your boss that you already have plans. It could be to get together with family, a theater event, out of town, etc. Who says that you don't take care of a sick relative over the weekend or that you have to watch your friend's kids, etc. If you already made plans in advance of this meeting being set, who's to say that it isn't out of town, that it wouldn't cause you to lose money if you canceled or that it wouldn't put you out.

If the meeting was set for an unscheduled work day, then you have every right not to go. I don't think it's any of his business of where or what you're doing this weekend.

1) Tell him that at a completely out-of-control party a few months ago, you wound up married to your college roommate's brother, whose parents are strict Orthodox Jews who won't let him marry outside of the faith, so the two of you, along with your legal council, are meeting with the elders of the synagogue to have it annulled and expunged from public record to save his family (perhaps you've heard of them? The Campbell's… as in "soup"?) any media embarassment.

2) Your aunt's toy poodle has been bred for championship offspring, and the poor thing is scheduled for delivery by Caesarean section this weekend, and Lola Grande Dame of Lourdes (full purebred name) will only respond calmly to the sound of your voice, and you are needed in the delivery room.

3) Point to the front of your shirt and ask him if he sees the words "Boss's *****" anywhere on it. When he says no, then tell him you ain't coming to no skanky group hug meeting…

You have a sick relative in (name a nearby city/ state that is at least 4 hours drive away) and you need to help them get their house in order.

A wedding out of town is another good one

Say its against your religion to work on Sundays. Sundays are your day of reuniting with God. It would be discriminative if your boss harped on you for this and didnt respect your religion.

First of all I don't know why you have to lie .... anyhow my understanding if it's a personal matter they can ask you details.

I would just tell him I was out of town in a personal matter. And be assertive when you tell him.
