Lead is a poison to humans, but is found in many paints and glazes because it makes vibrant colors. Pottery, that is made to be used, should not have lead in the glaze. If you put food into a pot that has a lead glaze, it may leech into the food. Lead can slowly build up in the human body, if consumed, and cause serious health problems, even brain damage or death. Most high fire glazes, that are used for pots and cups will not have lead in them. But if you are in doubt, only buy a glaze from a reputable pottery dealer, and ask about it.

Lead oxide is a very useful material in making low melting point glasses and glazes, you can get a whole range of nice colors at relatively low temperatures.
However if you make a bowl say with a lead glaze and put an acid like fruit juice in it, a lot of the lead will dissolve into the juice and not be good for anyone who drank it.
Making reasonable colors without lead is a lot harder, so is usually more expensive, and may not look as bright as the lead glaze, but if the work is something that will hold food, it will need to have the glaze made without lead.
Certified lead free glazes are available and best if there is a chance that someone will eat off of the thing you are making or buying.

Lead Free glaze is the glaze you would use if you are making pottery that will be used for cooking or eating or drinking. It should also be used if it will be handled. Do not use a lead based glaze for anything a child will handle even breifly
