The car salesman's earnings are going to DEPEND on their total sales, aren't they? That makes the earnings the dependent variable.

Let's get another example. Say someone is doing long distance running, and the variables are time and distance. The amount of distance you run is going to DEPEND on how much time is spent running. That makes distance the dependent variable.

If you're talking about the math function F(x)

with F being the total sales, and x the earnings for sale (that will be related with the commision)

than F is dependent of x. Got it?

Curiosity: Economically, both are dependent variables, altough the total sales is something you know you'll get independentely of seling or not.

Your total sales DETERMINE how much you get paid.

Therefore your independent variable is your total sales.

The variable that DEPENDS on that is your earnings, so that's the dependent variable.

dependant variables-depend on another thing to get the answer
Independant variables-stand alone
ie. if you were doing an experiment and you wanted to find out if snow melted faster in hot or cold, you would have a control (one in room temperature)and one in an oven and one in a fridge, then your independant variable would be like the amount of snow but the melting rate would be depenant because it would melt slower or faster in hot or cold. do you get it??

the first (earnings) is independent, and the second (total sales) is dependent, that is because the total is dependent on how much you earn.
