I think you are confusing Malcolm X with Martin Luther King. The purpose is to celebrate another day of freedom. Something we only celebrate here in America on the 4th of July. If there was more humility in this world and more celebration days to be grateful for freedom we might have a better world. King was a Gods sent, he freed oppressed people and women were really pleased as well. They were freed too. Civil rights, where they could not string someone up for race, or beat you up if you were a woman and the husband was allowed, murder is not condoned but it was if you were black, poor white trash, Jew, chinese, etc., and a woman, could be locked up in a mental institution by her husband and no one cared, when the men doctors and women doctors too could give them electrical shock treatments, so she would go nuts then she could not sue him for divorce and take any money to live on. Children suffered everywhere about many things before King, and mostly from ignorance. They were beaten too in many cases. That is why we celebrate and so what a day off that is the least we can do. He was killed by our government traitors within.

There is no Malcolm Luther King day! There was a Malcolm X who was a leader for civil rights after Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated for leading many civil rights movements, including an integral part in the civil rights movement in Mississippi that stopped all blacks from riding the city buses, until the state of Mississippi recognized that segregation between blacks and whites would not be tolerated. Simple God given rights for humanity is the reason that we celebrate his life one day a year! Peace, love, and joy to you!

I think this is a good question. Young people do want to know why we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I am Language Arts teacher and I want to give you some insight of Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Holiday. To answer your first question it is not just another reason for people to have another day off. We celebrate it because it is the people's way of saying thank you to a man who started good change in our society. It was Dr. King who made a huge impact during the Civil Rights Movement. Inequality which means not equal was very noticeable in these times. Dr. King fought for rights of all people. He wanted us all to be equal. So we pay tribute to a man of dignity and thank him for his dream on this day...Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Day.
Below are some websites for more information. I hope my brief synopses helped you.

You must be a racist. First, to say Malcom luter king day instead of MARTIN luther king day is a disgrace. Second, the purpose is to understand the diversity and complextions in the world and how we should all get along, as MLK wanted. He sacraficed his life to the civil rights movement, and this is to honor that.

His name is Martin Luther King so I think you need to know who we celebrate first and then ask questions about why we celebrate him. There's tons of stuff on him online. You can even find the video of "I have a dream" which is Martin Luther King's most famous speech.
I'll give you the link to it:

Enjoy! I hope this will clarily some of your questions.

Who is Malcom? His name was Martin Luther King and his passion for truth, racial reconciliation, and equality sparked a political and social revolution in this country. Why not do some research and learn more about this great Christian man for yourself.

Malcolm Luther King is not celebrated, but Martin is.
MLK was one of the greatest people in American history. He was able to stand up against the establishment demanding civil rights. His main concern was the shabby treatment of "Negroes" , but he demanded civil rights for everyone. He learned a lot from the life of Gandhi and he abhorred violence. His murder was one of the biggest tragedies in American history.
The official story is that he was killed by a lone gunman, but he was making a lot of headway in his quest and forced the White House to get involved in civil rights. I am sure many still question his murder.
My question is that his children are continuing his work, but why don't we hear from them more often?
