Is it turbocharged? Some turbo vehicles have a turbo timer to keep the engine running and allow the turbo to cool before shutting off. Without this the oil in turbo stops moving in a hit turbo and can turn to carbon and stuff up the turbo.

3 possibilities come to mind
1 turbo timer
2 anti run solenoid on carby
3 carbon on heads igniting incoming fuel mix - i had an old fairlaine that was so babied by the previous owners it built up so much carbon on the heads that it all glowed red hot & acted like spark plugs
