There is a flapper valvce inside the tank- if it is warped, cracked, or not seating properly your tank will not hold water. Easy fix 5.00 part flapper from hardware. If your fill valve is not filling tank fast enough the line may have debris in it. Shut off stop valve at the wall and clean out the float valve inside your tank- very easy fix.

It can be cause by a number of things. Open the top of the toilet and take a look inside. check for the following:

1) flapper not sealing. There is a rubber "stopper" at the bottom of the tak. If this isn't seated properly the water will run until it moves the flapper. easy solution buy a new one and replace.

2) check the status of the float and float valve. There should be a black or red ball that is attached to a rod. Try gently bending it a little bit toward the botton of the tank.

In addition to the previous mentioned possibilities, it could also be an obstructed shut off valve located at the bottom left side of toilet, on the wall or from the floor. They are also not difficult to change. Just be sure to buy the correct kind to replace it with. I would change the fill valve and the flapper first before pursuing this step. Also pick up a new flex supply line if you don't already have one as the old metal stiff ones sometimes leak when reused. Good luck

Yes, it is the little rubber flapper that raises when you push the handle to flush. It is worn, and letting water through. It is easy to replace, and doesn't cost much.
