my mom and dad don't really know (it's not like I hide it from them or anything, it just doesn't come up.) But I don't think that they would like me listening to them, they'll think I'll get like Gerard was (drunk, a druggie, ect.) they'll judge him (even though he's different now) and he's got past that but he still curses a lot. And I'll never be able to go to a concert and I feel like I have to hide it from them but I love theirmusic, I understand it... and my parents just don't think that I can comprehend it. It's not like I'm all "MCR saved my life" and everything because I'm only 12 but I can sit there and decipher their lyrics and get something out of it, and I understand that when he curses... it's something because it gets his point across. How do I make my parents understand this?! Help!

Well, I can relate, I'm older than you, but my parents kind of misunderstand the whole point of it all...usually when I listen to their music around my parents, I like to listen to their cleaner songs, because they don't get mad then. My mom found out that Gerard used to be a drunk and stuff, and she kind of got upset and said that it might be influencing me badly, but I just explained that he's not into all of that now, and he's not encouraging people to follow that in his music... So just explain that the band members used to have problems with substance (like booze and stuff) but tell them how they're helping people get out of those problems, not hurting them.

And it's good that you like them...most 12 and 13 year old are obsessed with that hip hop stuff...

Well sometimes, they don't have to understand. Just knowing what MCR has done for you is good enough. Trust me they have saved my life more than once. My parents really don't know about it either. My mom does know about me listening to them but they only song she's ever heard is Welcome to The Black Parade so it doesn't really matter. They can't really judger Gerard. They don't know him. They only know what you can find on the internet and stuffl like that. I can do the whole lyric thing too. There is so much symbolism that you have to decode in order to understand. Parents just wouldn't understand it. You have to have a real mind for lyrics and poetry to fully get it. Unless they fully ask you about it don't worry. If they do let them listen to one of the cleanest songs and tell them what the words mean to you that could help them just to see that you are getting a positive message from it. MCR actually os very positive, it's what they try for. It has helped so many people who were lost be found so it can't be that bad right?

hi there i appreciate MCR too, they have an rather unique sound so there are not many similar sounding band and haters are fairly no longer cool. right it is a few bands concerning MCR: Circa live to inform the tale [help band on eyeball] Leathermouth [Frank Iero] Pencey Prep [Frank Iero] Thursday [yet another New Jersey band very comparable to MCR] different bands like My Chemical Romance: upward thrust Aganist The Killing Tree The Used Senses Fail eco-friendly Day New Atlantic 30S.T.M Taking back Sunday +40 4 Funeral For a pal Aiden tale Of The year Hawthorne Heights yep... and bullet for my valentine, AFI and HIM are noticeably cool too yet no longer very comparable to MCR. wish you have a good time with regardless of latest music you're gonna rock out to =]

I think ur not giving ur Parent's the chance. I love MCR, Gerard Way is so hot. And if ur parent's don't understand that u like them, then its they're problem. MCR only curses to make a point across its not like its a "bad" band.

I'm 13, almost 14, and i feel the same. This sounds totally hippie - but I get something out of it.
plus, Gerard way is so HOT!
anyways, my parents arent crazy about me listening to them, and me and my mom got in a fight when she called Gerard a fag.
(poor Gerard)
But, they accept it. They accept that its who i am.
I'll eventually go to one of their concerts,, whether i need to sneak out of the house and catch the subway or I need to jump on the back of my older cousins car and run away for a little while, I will end up going.

I think you should show them one of your favorite songs and ask them what they think. Then you tell them what you think.

Sometimes, dealing with hard teenage situations makes me feel like "MCR saved my life" cause I listen to their music to get me out of my own world and into a better one- but then Im like, wow, i must be so over dramatic!

Unfortunately, parents don't much like letting their kids listen to anything besides what they listen to - and what they listen to is generally very boring. Parents have been like that for centuries, but there are some who are more lenient than others. Maybe your parents would be lenient if you asked them how they felt about it; let them listen to a song from one of MCR's CD's - one that's more mellow and less scream-o-ish, otherwise your parents probably *will* have a cow.

Okay, well apparently your parents are really strict..tell them this..its just music..and they showed so many kids that music is important, and gerard had problems with drugs because he was young he didnt know better...tell them that you will never get into drugs because you know better.

the lyrics are about his life, and what hes been through, and hes telling a story throughout that.its nothing violent, there just words, its not like you will ever yell them to your parents.

MCR IS THE BOMB!!!

Just tell your parents you like them. If they say no don't listen to them, then.... umm.... oh well?

If they say yes you can listen to them, then go enjoy the Black Parade.

I suggest you let them listen to a sad song that has a sad meaning, like "Welcome to the Black Parade". Tell them that this song is about a guy that's dying of cancer, and is remembering his fav memory which was the time when his dad and him went to a parade. This certainly worked for me.

I'm 13, and they let me listen to it!! w00t!!!
