Slow process..
Only 2 factors..
1) Your machine has a virus
2) Hardware problems (Harddisk, Video Card, Motherboard, Memory, etc).
For virus, i suggest that you do an online virus/spyware scan.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Or any free antivirus online scan (try searching google for the link
on mcaffee, etc).
If its hardware, best bet is to bring it to a shop for diagnostics. Or
if you are a techy, diagnose it one by one.

may have to reboot
also when when did you last defrag or scan disk?
start
my computer
right click - on C drive
left click - on properties
under GENERAL tab - click disk cleanup
under TOOLS tab - click error checking
then - place a check in both boxes - click start
under TOOLS tab - click defragment now
then click analyze
then click defragment
do this at least once a month!
possible spyware - go to www.lavasoft.com
download freeware called Ad-aware
will scan your computer and quarentine or remove the boogies.
also the new Yahoo! IE7 has a free Norton Spyware scan
On the Y! line just to the right of the 'search web' - its the yellow target - click here, click full scan, and then run
best of luck
