There is no real number one because of the fact that the title is also pretty fleeting. There is always someone or something waiting in the wings that is better.

In order to be Number 1,
you must know about the topic/ subject/ matter
better than anyone else/ average people.
You have to master that subject/sports/ whatever... till the best that you can.
All the way till you realise that there is nothing that you do not know that is necessary pertaining to the subject/sports/etc...

Some would say it takes skill to be number 1.I think it takes a lot of luck. As they say I would rather be lucky than good.
