Because people tend to identify with their own.

Never heard the song they sing of 2 world wars and one world cup?! Yes they do overate themselves
Its british pride I suppose since they used to rule the world and have been the inventors of many things including the computer you are using right now! - just a fact that they still think that they are the best at most things and they aren't!
I suppose any sports person or team has to think that they are better than anybody else no matter where they are from or they would win would they???
They are one of the best at being hooligans and making the situation in the middle east even worst though bush has put the USA into number 1 spot for this and it looks like he wont move off the bilboard until he is replaced...
Oh and drinking alcohol they are good at too but the Scottish and Irish can beat them at the old drinking game!!!

For the same reason everyone other league thinks that they are better than they really are or every other team, they want supporters!! =]] i mean, yea winning every title you possibly can in a season is impossible. If the team loses, they won't have much of a fan club,so if they hype their reputation more and more woth the media, people want to follow the team..or the supposedly 'superstar' because they are stupid and follow what the media says. The more fans=more money! What team doesn't want more money?

media hype!!!!! and people believe what's printed in papers and on t.v.
The media has nothing better to write about than David Beckham has had his hair cut , people see him in the papers every day so he becomes an idol, but if it were to be Peter Beardsdale (good footballer but ugly)??? . So these guys and gals are becoming icons in some eyes , and they automatically think that they will change the world or, the team they are on will certainly win that one big cup.

Well, jealousy is all over the board today.
When a player or team is good then what's wrong with saying they're good, I'm a Franco-American who thinks that many clubs and players are good and better than others, English, Spanish, Brazilian etc., it doesn't damn matter where they're from as long as I like them.

firstly it's THEIR.. not there... try and learn how to speak english before you ask your question!
secondly.. i'm assuming your reference is to David Beckam.. if so then surely you think he's more special than we do...hence why some cigar smokin, ten gallon hat wearin cotton pickin loonatic has just shelled out some really serious amounts of cash for his "name" not his skills!
and that's why 1,000 hill billy red necks have just bought a season ticket......
and you question if us brits rate our stars/teams more than you lot..
remind me again how much you pay your baseball / NFL / basket ball "stars"?
get back to ya moonshine ya cotton pickin redneck and come back when you thought of a question you can actually back up!

A lot of fans are like that, and not just in England. Fans have hope and confidence in the teams they support.
