If you were in a relationship (marriage, etc), would it be wrong to class someone else as your soulmate - such as a best friend - whom you have known from childhood and is also the same gender?

A soulmate has nothing to do with marriage or relationship, though having your soulmate as your life partner is a fantastic thing!
But it can definetly be someone else in your life!
Oh and the word MATE implys friend last I checked, not lover.
Playmate
classmate
etc.
Soulmate is someone to whom you you feel a truely strong deep emotional bond, it is said to be the one person who you're heart has always been searching for, so ....????

I think you can have many soul mates. I've come to believe that soul mates are souls you meet along the way whom it's possible you've known before you were in your body. (I don't believe in reincarnation or living in several bodies/lives, but I believe it's possible you were with God and other souls before you entered your body.) I just think there are certain people, friends, boyfriends, family members, who you just connect with on such a soul-level, that you almost feel you've always known each other and were meant to connect with here "on earth." I think I've met a few soul mates already. As far as the romantic soul mate. That would be your spouse. If you don't feel a soul connection with your spouse, something might be wrong with that! Get to know each other more deeply or something.

I don't think your soulmate always has to be your lover/partner/husband/wife. It is nice if it turns out that way but its not always the case. A soulmate to me is someone you connect so well with that your life wouldn't be the same without them. You wouldn't be the person you are today with out them.

Traditionally the word is used for a significant other, but I don't see why you can't call whoever you want your soulmate. So I guess a good friend could be a soulmate if that's how you see it.

In England they use the word mate when referring to a friend.

I would say soul-mate is a lover or spouse. For the simple reason the word Mate is usually reserved for a Lover or Spouse. So Soul-Mate would be the one person made to be your perfect Lover.

A person who is a really good friend would be your Best Friend. Best Friend is the one person who is better for you than all your other friends or people you know. Best means better than all the rest.

Well, the word "mate" implies a lover, but I believe that there are all kinds of relationships that could be categorized as something as intense and important as a soulmate. I meet what I call "kindred spirits" every day.

I think that a soul mate can be someone else other than a significant other by all means. In my case I have a life long friend female married to her husband of fifteen yrs. and they both love me to pieces. They love me to the point that when I go back home to visit for as long as I stay they give up the most comfortable bed in their house for me to sleep in under my protest, their own bed. They choose to sleep apart and with their children when I'm home and notice I said when I'm home cuz their home is more my home than any of my kids homes or my brother and sisters homes. I only stay with them.

Their kids all eight and their grand children call me uncle Junior as if I were really their blood uncle with more respect for me than their real uncles.

Maria, my best friend and who I consider more of a sister than any of my blood related sisters is my soul mate and I love her to death and even after. There is nothing, absolutely nothing we don't know about each other and have never judged each other for our faults or sins. We've supported each other's ways and life without reservation and we know each other better than any of our spouses ever knew us. if we were ever sexually attracted to each other we would've never ever been so close. There has never been an ounce of jealousy from her husbands toward me but much jealousy from my significant others when I had one on hand towards her.

I'd give my life for my Sis and she for me. That's a soul mate. When I die or if she should die before me, God forbid we r in charged of each others funeral services and dispensations of our wills and our significant others know this and they must honor it or they will suffer the more for not complying with our wishes. Ironically we have never ever looked at each other ever sexually and never will.

I would be more apt to call them your "kindred spirit"...A soul mate is generally someone you are romantically and emotionally linked to who would be classified as the person you were meant to spend the rest of your life with. I don't know if I believe in soul mates necessarily because I think that there are many people who can be equally compatible to one particular person...

Absolutely. My best friend and I-friends for 16 years, have always called ourselves platonic soul mates, LOL. He is male, but it has nothing to do with romance. You can find that someone anywhere.
