Sometimes on newer computers a plug can have multiple uses. For example, if you want to set up a Dolby 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound speaker setup, the computer might need to turn the "mic in" plug to a "right rear output". So you would have to go to The Realtek Sound Manager(located in the control panel if you installed it) and tell it to switch it to a "mic in" source. It should automatically pop up a duologue box when you plug the mic asking if you just plugged in a mic or surround sound speaker but only if the Realtek Sound Manager is installed.

check device manager>hardware to see if there are no problems on your soundcard. also make sure the microphone is not muted (open volume control). also check mic on other equipment. there are usually 3 similar jacks which fit your mic, make sure you use the right one.
