Which is a better graphics card?

The ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

Or

The AT Radeon 9500

I talked to a upgrading person at Gateway and he said that the 9500 is better. I would have thought higher the number, higher the performance.

The 9800Pro is better, and its not even particularly close. The fillrate on the 9800Pro is 3 times as much, and the memory bandwidth is almost 3 times as much. Tell the Gateway guy that, he's probably never even heard of those two things.

The person at Gateway gave you very BAD info. The ATI Radeon 9800 pro is a much better card, and for your info the Radeon 9500 card is being discontinued.

The 9800 pro is better. In general, the higher the number in the same family, the better the card, but there are some exceptions. The 9550 is faster than the 9600, for example, I believe.

The 9500 only comes with 128MB onboard memory the 9800 Pro comes with 256MB (or 128MB 256MB is better) onboard memory.

You will do better with the 9800Pro over the 9500

The number doesn't mean much, its just part of the name, what really maters is Memory Clock, Memory Interface, Pixel Shadder & of course Memory itself. There are alot more things to consider.
