come with a price? must one suffer to be happy? This doesn't seem fair...

Not a price Kizz, but an obligation.
The obligation exists because when you do find happiness, it's important to share it in joy, selflessly. Otherwise, it becomes something selfish and self absorbed. The extreme is narcissism.
Joy and happiness is sustained through it's expression to others.

Well when you suffer you are able to understand things better and can appreciate things that happen in your life just a little bit better. When you suffer sometimes you realize bigs thing don't mean so much that the little things in life mean a lot more and those begin to be the things that make you happy!

Having to suffer at some point, makes one more appreciative of happiness.
It's unfortunate that things have to be that way ...without happiness we have a better idea of what is important to us.
