I have 512 mb of ram. My onboard video takes 16 mb away from that. But now i have a video card with its own memory. Is there a way i can get that 16 mb back? In my system information it says i have 496 mb.

Its a desktop pc, yes i can get into bios. The onboard is already disabled.

Do you know how to get into the BIOS on your laptop? If you do, you may be able to deactivate the on-board video card, there. If you do, it may release that memory.

I've found that rarely do harddrives or sticks of ram actually have what they are stated to have on the packaging. even processors usually don't print out in specs what they are touted to have on the labels. Chances are that the 512 stick of ram you have in your machine is actually only the 496 is states itself to be, either way trying to retrieve the remain 16 meg wouldn't matter one way or the other. if you really need more memory i'd suggest another 512 if the system can handle it, more if the system will allow. in my opinion, the more ram the merrier, everything works better if it isn't held up waiting for system resources.

Disabling it isn't enough. There should be another setting that determines how much memory is assigned to the built in video. You have to change that to zero.
