Because so many separate currencies with different exchange rates was a major handicap when doing business, so they sort of copied the USA and went with one currency to make business much easier.

Therefore they are slowly combining their economies and other state functions. The only significant EU participant not using the Euro is the United Kingdom. They have signed on to many of the EU policies by have resisted a change from the pound sterling currency.
