Today I was told I have blood in my urine, which is "typical for a UTI." The nurse sent my urine to the lab to confirm.

Can you describe the pain you felt when you had your infection?

1) I have like a mild sharp pain in the center of my lower abdomen. Could that be my bladder?
2) I also have a mild sharp pain in my lower back, but I thought it was just muscle pain due to inactivity while I've been sick. Could that be kidneys? (I thought the kidney pain would be like a dull throbbing pain, but now I'm not sure...)

Why do these things always happen to me at the end of the day on a Friday...? Sigh. Anyway, thanks to all answerers... any info would help. :)

you would feel kidney pain higher up in your back, just about where the ribs start.
Drink some cranberry juice to help flush out your urinary tract.
A gallon of cranberry juice has cleared up many a bladder infection without having to resort to antibiotics. I'm not saying you shouldn't use what the doctor gives you, but drinking the cranberry juice will help you heal much faster also.

I had kidney stones a couple of days ago and I had severe pain in the areas you have mentioned. Fortunately for me I did not have the infection. It is very common to have UTI if you have kidney stones as the stone may be blocking the urine from going out of the kidney. Please do not worry, there is nothing to be concerned. The medications are so good, you will not even feel that you ever had any such thing after the first dose.
Good luck and take care.

1. UTI symptoms vary from person to person, some people even have no symptoms. Mine felt like I was peeing razer blades.
2. The poster above is right about the cranberry juice. But, research shows it has to be the no sugar added, 100% cranberry kind that you would probably find at a health food store. Tastes yucky but can work like a charm. Drink lots of water as well.
3. You can also take over the counter urinary anesthetics like uristat or AZO, available in most pharmacies. Some of them color your urine orange which may interfere with test results if you have to give them another sample. They work well though.
4. You have probably already heard this but, to prevent UTI's in the future, wipe front to back, pee before and after sex, drink enough fluids.

Do you urinate differently then before. I mean besides the burning that comes along with a UTI. A clue to kidney function is checking your urine output. Usually if the doc suspects kidney problems he will ask for a 24 hour urine sample.
